Postpartum Creativity

For many people, birthing a baby is the most creative act they have attempted. Having a personal creative practice–even something that only takes a few minutes a day–to build on that energy can be profoundly healing and affirming during pregnancy and throughout postpartum recovery. Many of us find that our brain works differently after giving birth, and it’s a journey to learn and appreciate those changes. This can manifest in increased abilities in some ways, decreased in others, or altogether different interests than what we may have had before birth. I am happy to discuss this anytime before birth up to five years (or more!) postpartum.

From 2021-2024, I hosted quarterly MoonMuse Creative Gatherings online and in person through 4th Trimester Arizona. We generally spent a few moments talking about the importance of recognizing, inviting, and nurturing creative impulses before digging into a particular prompt and often sharing our own work with each other. I also presented at the 2022 4th Trimester AZ Annual Conference on the topic “Finding and Nurturing Creativity in the Midst of the Mess” and will continue quarterly gatherings, which can be found on the 4th Trimester AZ website.

If you are interested in my personal work, please feel free to check out this collaboration with my husband, a photo/poetry project visiting the dreamlike nature of being a parent, called Dreaming Along the Laurel, and also my poetry chapbook, Poured Out.

"Table for Two"

Pale pink eyelids lightly closed,

peacefully twitching with dreamy depth

Long lashes, delicately draped,

Rose mouth

pulsing lazily, drawing

Your widow’s oil:

an endless dinner,

my very self

poured out.

Pudgy fingers rest possessively,

occasionally flexing

I’m still here

Soft, precious hands of sugar cookie dough

Wispy, gossamer hair,

a few strands lightly plastered

with the sweet-smelling sweat

of baby labor:

to eat, to sleep, to trust.
